Purpose

Laboraroty of Informatics has as its main mission research as far as it concerns the knowledge area of Informatics and Telecommunications as well as students' instruction and their general support during their studies at the Department.

Location-Operation Schedule

The laboraroty has three rooms one in the basement of the central bulding, one in the third floor of Derigni St., and one on the third floor of Patission 80 St.

The typical operation schedule is shown below:

Software

The lab software includes Windows 2000 & 2003 Pro operating systems, desktop applications like MS Office Premium and the full application development environment Visual Studio 6. The above mentioned are supported, whenever is necessary, by MS SQL server 2000.

The laboratory also has the Java development tool JBuilder, Enterprise Server, as well as the programming environments Delphi and C++ Builder. The above mentioned is a donation of Inprise Borland and ÌData. There are also Java Development Kit, Java Servlet Develpment kit and Java Web Server of Sun.

The educational tools that are available are:

  • Modelling and Project management tools such as Microsoft VISIO, MS Project, ARISv6, Eviews, Logware, Transcad, Precision Tree, @Risk, Navision Attain and SIMUL8.
  • Web devaelopment tools such as Adobe Design Premium CS3, Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver.

Cygwin is also installed, in order to give students the opportunity to experiment with the UNIX environment and all the associated applications (Latex, Postgress g++ f97 etc).Finally, there is also the possibility of functioning as X terminals ExceedV6 and provide access to graphic environments of UNIX Servers.

Finally, the hole Microsoft software library (except Microsoft Office) is available for borrowing or downloading to the students of the Department through the ELMS service.

Workstations

There laboratory, consists of 80 workstations in total. More specifically, the hardware includes:

  • Thirty (30) Pentium IV PCs, 3.0 GHz Dual Core, 1GB RAM and 80 GB hard disk,
  • Thirty (30) Pentium IV PCs, 3.0 GHz, 2GB RAM and 250 GB hard disk
  • Twenty (20) Pentium IV PCs, 3.0 GHz, 512MB RAM and 80 GB hard disk

Finally, the laboratory has six (6) Laser printers, two (2) color Inkjet, which cover multiple printing needs, and two (2) scanners.

Servers

The laboratory is based on nineteen (19) servers.

  • Four (4) Dual Xeon 64bit 2,8GHz, 2Gb RAM, 3x300Gb SCSI HDs, Fujitsu-Siemens Primergy rack mounted.
  • One (1) Dual Xeon 64bit 2,8GHz, 2Gb RAM, 4x300Gb SCSI HDs, Fujitsu-Siemens Primergy tower.
  • One (1) AMD Opteron 64bit 2,2GHz, 8Gb RAM, 2x300Gb SCSI HDs.
  • Five (5) Pentium IV, 1,8 GHz
  • One (1) dual Pentium 500Mhz which is th host of the main site of the Department.
  • One (1) Pentium 733Mhz with Primary Dïmain Controller duties and Fileserver for the roaming profiles. It also operates as a web server so as to give students access to their profile via web folders from their home. Finally it operates as a printer server of an a HP5000 printer.
  • One (1) dual Pentium 500 Mhz with SecondaryDïmain Controller duties and Fileserver for the roaming profiles. It also operates as a web server so as to give students access to their profile via web folders from their home.
  • Two (2) Pentium IV 2.4Ghz which serve the electronic commerce stores, that students develop on the Commerce Server 2000 during the 6th semester.

The above mentioned equipment have Windows Server 2000 operating system and are built on an Active Directory 2000/2003 structure.

  • One (1) Pentium 733Mhz and one (1) Pentium IV, 2,4 GHz with NAT Router êáé Firewall duties, which provide controlled acesss and internet security. They also maintain the databases of the Department (MySQL DB server) and serve the neeeds for electronic mail of the laboratory (sendmail mailserver). This servers have a FreeBSD Unix operating system
  • One (1) Pentium IV 2.4 Ghz with Linux Red Hat 9 OS, responsible for CRM needs of the labs.
