The Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) was originally founded in 1920 under the name Athens School of Commercial Studies. It was renamed in 1926 as the Athens School of Economics and Business Science, a name that was retained until 1989 when it assumes its present name, that is the Athens University of Economics and Business.

It is the third oldest Higher Education Institution in Greece and the oldest in the general fields of Economics and Business. In 1984 the School was divided into three Departments, namely the Department of Economics, the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Statistics and Informatics. Today the structure of the University programme is as follows:

A formal Master's programme in Economics was launched in 1978 and another one in Business Administration started in 1985. Today the University is running 28 different programmes at the postgraduate level, which are the following:

The postgraduate departments award Master's degrees. Doctorates are awarded by each department upon the completion of a dissertation and its successful defence in public.

Quality Assurance Procedures

  • Evaluation of all instructional elements of each taught course by attending students
In the end of each semester, all students assess (through questionnaires) the courses they attend and the appropriate teachers. The results are discussed in the General Assembly of the Department and the required actions are initiated in terms of quality in teaching every year. The "best teachers awards" are given based on this evaluation.
  • Senior staff advisory and development process for junior member of faculty
Every September the junior members of faculty prepare their annual reports (in terms of research, publications, teaching etc) and they discuss them with three senior staff. This advisory and development process assesses the performance of the previous year and sets the goals for the next year for every junior staff.
  • External experts assessment
Every year the Department invites 4-5 well-known professors from abroad to visit the school, spend 3-5 days with member of the Department (including students, PhD students etc) and prepare an assessment report in terms of quality in teaching, research, infrastructure, post-graduate courses, etc. In 2003 the following professors visited and assessed the Department:
    - Prof. Chrisanthi Avgerou, London School of Economics
    - Prof. Emmanuel Thanassoulis, Aston Business School
    - Prof. George Vozikis, University of Tulsa
    - Prof. Eric van Heck, Erasmus University
  • Annual staff evaluation of All doctoral students' research progress
Every year, all doctoral students prepare a report and a presentation on their annual research progress. The results are discussed in the General Assembly of the Department and the decision is taken for the continuation (or not) of the studies. There is also a formal PhD student development program.
